The problem
Most families have one real power choice. Rates go up, bills get harder, and homeowners have little control. That is not a free market. That is a system where one company has too much power over daily life.
The proposal
Chesapeake should remove local barriers that treat grid connection as the only path to a livable home. If a home can safely use solar, batteries, generators, or another inspected power setup, the city should have a clear path to approve it.
The guardrails
- Require safe wiring and inspection.
- Require enough power for basic habitability.
- Let homeowners choose equipment that meets code.
- Do not punish families for making their own power safely.
The goal
Energy freedom is about cost, safety, and choice. The city should not pick winners for one utility. The city should set clear safety rules and then let residents solve problems in practical ways.
